Swift was incensed that John Mayer publicly called her out for her 2010 song “Dear John,” which is presumed to be about him. It’s clear from both sides that the 2009 relationship between Swift and the rocker cad who’s 12 years her senior didn’t end well.
Mayer had previously complained to the magazine that “I never did anything to deserve that (song). It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”
“I didn’t write his first and last name in the song,” said Swift. “So that’s him taking it on - when he had an album to promote. I didn’t say anything about the person’s identity. ‘Dear John’ is a well-known concept.”
Breaking up, though, has been a lucrative business for Swift. She scored another huge hit this summer with the song “We Are Never, Ever Getting Back Together,” which is purported to be about another one of her ex-boyfriends, actor Jake Gyllenhaal
Why not just tell her exes off over the phone instead of raking them over the coals in her songs, interviewer Brian Hiatt asked.
“Where’s the fun in that?” answered Swift.
I was talking with some friends on twitter about the new song and who they thought it was about and then I sat back and thought wait, why are we focusing on who it’s about… but then I realized it’s important to know who the song is about because it gives us insight into the lyrics.
When songs connect and are about more than one person, we can compare past songs and see just what Taylor was feeling and what she went through.
If there’s anything Taylor fans can do, it’s find the smallest details and bring it to light. That being said I’d love to hear from all of you on your thoughts about the song.
Some think it’s about Jake because of the line “you flew me to places I’ve never been.”
but that seems to really be the only thing that could be about Jake, if you take the line literally, since he flew her around in a private Jet.
But it could also not be meaning flying in a plane, Taylor is known for her metaphors and it could just mean that she experienced things she’s never felt before (not in a bad way, just any kind of experiences or places she’s never been).
I personally think the song is more about John Mayer, because Jake seemed like a good guy in the beginning. I don’t think he has a bad rep for dating a bunch of girls, so the whole “it’s about a relationship where there were a whole bunch of red flags” wouldn’t really apply. ”she also ignored when they said run as fast as you can. Which means that John had been wanting her to sing with him (I was in your sights) then when they got together (you got me all alone)

I also feel the line “he was long gone when I met him” further talks about John and how his relationships and the way he was proceeds him. He’s known for his notorious relationships with woman.
He just went around with different woman, ripping their hearts out. He seems like he’s changed now but who knows….
We Have heard that RED was about a relationship is about a relationship from beginning to end. But I have a hard time believing every song is about Jake… that would just be boring, and that’s the last thing Taylor is…
